I can't believe I forgot to talk about this on Wednesday's blog. When I was at Barnes and Noble, listening to the wise words of Sister Souljah, she cleared up rumors about The Coldest Winter Ever movie. She said that years ago, when she was in D.C. at a conference she met up with Jada Pinkett Smith. And she had given Jada an advanced copy of the book. Jada told her that it had to be made in to a movie. They got in to contact with each other, this was like 8 or 9 years ago, maybe even right around the time the book came out. Anyways, HBO was interested and worked with Souljah and Jada to get a film made, that was just going to air on HBO. However, HBO ended up loosing interest, and Souljah had to buy the rights back of the film. She wanted to buy the rights back, because she owned the publishing rights to the book, so why should someone else own the rights to the film. Plus, HBO could have just made the movie without her, because they owned the rights at the time. She said that she had to pay up to $250,000 to get the rights back, and she did.
So now she owns the rights. She said people have come to her with offers and contracts to make it into a movie, but the right offer hasn't come along. She said that she can "read" and she reads all of the contracts that are brought to her, and if she doesn't like "one line" of that contract, then she's not signing it. But now, Jada has contacted her again about the movie, and they maybe talking very soon. Gosh, who would play Winter? Unfortunately the African American actresses to choose from are few and far between, especially of younger actresses. Souljah said that Winter's life in the book goes from when she was 13 to 18, and she ended it in jail, as we know. So who could play her? We don't have that many choices. Meagan Good? Who knows? I forgot to mention that in my last blog about Souljah. I'm on chapter 6 of the new book, and I keep waiting for Winter's name to come up, but I don't think its going to happen soon. Its not what you think, but it is damn good.

I think KiKi Palmer would make an excellent choice. Lauren London would be my 2nd choice. I think Meagan is beautiful but I don't think she has the acting chops for such a character.
well i read both books coldest winter ever and midnight ... i wont give away the juicy details. back to the movie though i think some one new should play winter ages 13-15 but i also think jurnee should play winter 61-18 she is perf... i mean give some other new black actresses a chance at roles!!!

The actors and actresses that Sister Soulja chooses to play these characters should all be brand new faces. The African-American actors and actresses are too old to play Winter and Midnight. These two characters in particular should be fresh faces that may not be too known. They should also possess the looks of the characters as well. The part of Winter's mother however may be played well by Taraji P. Henson. Santiago (father) should be played by an up and coming Hispanic actor.
Drew Sidora should play Winter.
i think Lil Wayne should play Bullet because He is only in his early twenties now and I think that he has the looks where he can look like a young teenager and a young adult. Also I seen him on ESPN and he can get rid of the southern accent. Also body make up can get rid of the tattoos.

Honestly, I don't that Lil Wayne or those other suggestions were "Northern" enough. I know Midnight was dark chocolate, but I was thinking Fabulous would have been a great selection. Nas too, but too but he doesn't look young enough for the part anymore. They just got that laid back natural swag, like Midnight.
As for Winter,hmmm, I don't know. Maybe that chic who played Kim in the Notorious movie. If so, she should brush up on her acting skills just a little more.
But to be honest, I don't care WHO plays the part. I just want to see the damn movie!!! lol

I agree that Tyrese should play Midnight. Now that right there is THE defintion of sexual chocolate. Perfect for the part. OR Derek Luke as a second choice. For at least one part of Winter should be Lauren London. KeKe Palmer doesn't have enough experience and I think that London would be on point.Meagan IS cliche, but still a good fit. Santiago could be played by Terrance Howard because he definitely looks the part. But T.I. could fit to. His swag is off the charts and he's a smooth light skinned brotha. But a problem would be timing... When does he get out anyway?:P Lisa Raye for Winter's mother. She's an awesome actor. Not Taraji P. because she's played the part so many times.

Midnight is described as being a sudanese refugee, so lil wayne or nas would not work. I think all fresh faces would be best. Tasha Smith would be great as the Mom though..
Ok im in chapter 8...this book is awesome...in the first 2 chapter i was hooked..this book is straight hood and thats the best part...i think that Lauren London could play the role of winter..but the 15-18 age...they gotta find someone younger for the years b4 dat...Midnight i think shuld be played by Idris Elba...he looks yung enuff to play the age of a 22 year old...Santiaga in my opinion is terrance howard..but thats because he is so good in every role he plays...but if someone could take the role its cool...cant wait to finish the book...and if the movie comes out...im in there!!!

I love Jurnee, but I think she would be a major miscast as Winter. She's extremely talented- and I mean NO DISRESPECT, but Winter was real REAL thick. And her body was a major part to her character. Like how she used her sexuality as a form of power and didn't work on other aspects of herself. Tasha Smith for the mom-Love it. Santiago: Rick Fox or maybe Roger Guinevere Smith.But that's a little lame just getting a light brotha to play a Latino. Winter: Lauren London, Beyonce (the thick version). A new person would be nice too... spread the wealth around.
I don't know why "we" are trying to pull from the rapper/actor bucket for actors to play the male roles in this potential movie. We all agree that the characters are strong and need to be played by those with talent. And if we want fresh faces we need to be vying for people whose acting is both their career and passion. The hunger that each character has in the book, will definitely shine through film if the right people are chosen. What I find to be the most off is people wanting Lil Wayne to be cast as anything Let's do this LONG AWAITED film some justice and cast career actors. There is no need to muddy this film with people who are trying to cross-over into other genres. Actors and actresses, namely African Americans have enough trouble getting work in Hollywood and here we go again making it harder

I think personally you should search for new faces for your book because everybody know how good your book is so there is no need to search big go to the high school in Gainesville, Florida i gurranted you that you will come out with most of your characters.

What the heck...? Come on now. I agree with Lil Scrappy being somewhere in the movie, he is fine as wine. But Eva Mendes as the mother? Hello people, Winter was NOT hispanic nor was she latino. She was a light skinned black girl with a nice face & nice hair. Her mother was a pretty dark skinned black woman, the book clearly stated that. Her father was BLACK too! He was just a light skinned brother w/nice hair.
I think Jurnee Smollet has the looks to be Winter but she has such a sweet girl persona.. Winter was far more devious & sassy. & i dnt think Keke would be a good fit either. for 1, she's kind of getting too big to play young Winter (or at least she will be by the time they make this movie) & she also gives off the same vibes as Jurnee. I agree w/those who say that fresh faces should be picked for the film. As a matter of fact, I think that I SHOULD play the part of Winter!! I sure do fit the profile. Hee hee :). I agree with some of the acters and actress you guys have named but lets not forget that in the book Winter is described as having beautiful DARK chocolate skin. So I wouldn't pick Lauren London...not to discredit her talent, she just doesn't fit the part. Keisha Knight Pulliam would be good. Tasha Smith for the mother & I agree with Mehki for midnight and definitely T Howard for Santiago. I'm still out on a (young)Winter.
To make the movie work she should team up with John Singleton or Tyler Perry. I think they will pick the perfect cast.I feel like some of Perry's past cast memebers fits perfect for certain characters in the book, but the only thing is Im not sure how Perry's would react to assiting in making in a movie with out singing or chirst teaching a lesson.

I don’t care who plays these roles as long as they are ON POINT and can properly depict the characters as they were shown in the book.
I've been FEINING to see this in movie form, I mean; this book has the potential to be the best urban film yet.
All I ask is that these actors and actresses have the ability to captivate the audience and give off the right feel. It's all about the demeanor and the mannerism in which they bring to the character. Oh and physical similarity is a must. I want to be able to look at the actress/actor and say “Oh Yeah…that’s a perfect match”
I think Winter should be played by Kayla Puratt the girl from one on one. her father should be played by the guy who played Aaliyah dad on romeo must die (do not remember his name) her mom Lisa Ray MCcoy and midnight Tyrese. I was reading on this page where winter got her face slashed and she ended up in jail. where is that part from? what book is that? and how is the book Midnight?

I am reading Midnight the Meaning of Love now and I agree with the comment about many of you reading the books again. These are powerful characters and must be played by powerful actors and actresses. Midnight and Winter are very important characters and their attitudes have to be portrayed by an actor or actress that can take this role by the horns. So many fans are dedicated to these books I would hate to see the movie come out and have to watch lil Wayne on the screen. It would be too painful. Djimon Hounsou would be beautiful as the role of midnight in the Coldest Winter Ever. The younger Midnight was never part of this book so we cannot put a character to the youngest midnight. I do agree that a new actress should play Winter...if all else fails, I think Megan Good needs a role like this she has not bee offered a role that brings out her talent yet. Who said Tasha Smith for the mom? Please...no...is all I have to say. I guess we will all see hopefully soon!

People are saying that Meagan Good is cliche, that's what the actress playing Winter should be, because NEWS FLASH: Winter was a cliche and the FALL of her character was supposed to symbolize the fall of the cliche. Pretty girls with no brains, and nothing productive going on in their life. A new, upcoming actress would be nice to see but Meagan is a PRETTY, TALENTED actress who has the ability to look 13, 14, 15, 16, and 25 years of age. I think she would be great.
Tyrese would be good as Midnight, or a new, upcoming actor.
Terrance Howard would make one hell of a Santiaga. His acting chops are an A+
I think a casting director and Sista Souljah would do a good searching the streets of Brooklyn for these characters. Remember how Vin Diesel got discovered? Walking down the street, fresh out of prison.

Santiaga: Laz Alonso fits my mental image of what Santiaga would look like but I know that Terrence Howard would murder this part as well, so either one of them would be cool.
Mrs. Santiaga: Tasha Smith (if you've watched the miniseries "The Corner" where she plays a dopefiend, yall would totally agree with this because she nailed that role.)
Sister Souljah: Jill Scott (since she lost weight she looks a lot younger so I def think she could pull it off)
Natalie: Maybe Naturi Naughton, but again an unknown would be cool too.
Bullett: This could be an unknown too.
Anyway, I think this movie should have mostly unknown actors but just enough known ones so that people who haven't read the book would be interested (i.e. most guys that I know haven't read it but would prob watch it with the right cast of characters).
Just saying, Santiaga isn't Latino. He's black.
I love and adore this book and all it's many characters and anticipate the movie. Now I know the cast will be star studded but I do not want it to be over the top. I want it how I see it in my head. I appreciate that Sister Souljah recognizes the severity of putting and keeping a project of this size and importance in the proper hands!
